New qualification provides skills to boost our sustainability credentials

IEMA - Transforming the world to sustainability

Calabash is committed to securing success by operating as a responsible business. Our newly launched Sustainability Report 2024 highlights the work we are doing to embed best practice throughout our operations and help our clients make choices that benefit people and planet. We need to build our skillset to take that work to the next stage and so we have enrolled Sarah Salmon on the IEMA Certificate in Environmental Management Practitioner Membership (PIEMA).

Consultancy Wylde Connections is supporting Calabash throughout our ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) journey but to maximise impacts we need to build our in-house capabilities. We believe in developing talent within our own business and have tasked our Office Assistant Sarah Salmon to become our sustainability lead.

Sarah joined Calabash in October 2024 and is keen to play a more active role in helping us meet our sustainability objectives. To ensure she has the knowledge and skills she needs, Sarah is about to embark on an internationally recognised qualification for environmental professionals.

PIEMA is a professional accreditation from the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), designed to deepen knowledge and practical expertise for those leading sustainability agendas. It provides a comprehensive overview of sustainability principles, legislation, and business integration. On completion of the course, delegates can apply for Practitioner Membership (PIEMA), signifying their competency in environmental management and commitment to best practice.

Sarah will study three in-depth modules delivered over three weeks:

Module 1 – Fundamentals of Sustainability, Business, and Governance. This explores

the core principles of sustainability and environmental management, the role of business in meeting key challenges and the use of key frameworks such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals and Environmental Management Systems.

Module 2 – Environmental Legislation and Regulation. Delegates are taken though key regulations that apply to business, compliance requirements in the sustainability arena and how to use tools such as environmental impact assessments (EIA) and life cycle assessments (LCA) in business decision-making.

Module 3: Tools, Strategies, and Implementation for Environmental Management. This is all about practical application, including measuring carbon footprints and developing reduction strategies. It provides guidance on engaging with stakeholders, as well as developing and implementing an effective sustainability strategy.

On completion of the course, Sarah will be equipped to support Chief Operating Officer Thomas Salmon in implementing our robust sustainability Action Plan and Road Map. Key priorities for the coming months include improving resource efficiency and continuing to develop service offers that help Calabash clients improve their sustainability credentials.

Sarah said: “I am very excited about starting PIEMA. This is a new challenge for me and gives me a fantastic opportunity to deliver positive outcomes. We are always looking for ways to manage our own impacts and help clients make more sustainable choices. The qualification will broaden my thinking, raise my awareness and give me the tools I need to meet our goals.”

These new capabilities will help us embark on the next stage of our sustainability journey and supercharge our actions. “It means that we can be even more ambitious when setting targets”, explained Thomas. “That is very important to use in terms of demonstrating our commitment, extending our reach and building a more resilient business model that helps us gain competitive advantage.”
