ISO audits highlight how good governance drives sustainable practice

The Calabash team is celebrating after having completed a successful audit of our quality and environmental management systems. The ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards demonstrate that we have robust management systems in place to not only meet customer needs but support our work in securing compliance and reducing environmental impact.

ISO 9001 is an internationally recognised standard that outlines the requirements for a quality management system, ensuring organisations consistently meet customer and regulatory requirements while striving for continuous improvement. We secured the standard in 2019 and are subject to a recertification audit every three years. In February, an external auditor came in to conduct a systematic review which included examining documentation and records, interviewing staff, and observing operational processes.

Our ISO 14001 certification was reviewed at the same time as part of an in-depth two day audit. It involved a thorough evaluation of our Environmental Management System to ensure it meets the high standards required by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The auditor assessed our policies, procedures and records. The visit provided us with an opportunity to highlight how we identify and manage environmental aspects, legal compliance, and risk controls.

Calabash is a people-first business, and our staff are our greatest asset. We invest heavily in their training and development and the audit put their knowledge and skills to the test. On the second day the auditor visited a client site to observe operational practices and interview Calabash employees to check that they understand how to implement procedures and maintain standards.

The auditor recertified both ISO standards, identifying no non-conformities or opportunities for improvement. The report stated: “Calabash have continued to operate their management system that is supporting effective and efficient company operations. There is also clear evidence of governance and commitment from the company directors to ensure the management system operates to meet intended outcomes.”

Calabash Chief Operating Officer Thomas Salmon said: “I am delighted to secure these re certifications. Good governance and environmental management form a key part of our sustainability strategy. We are always striving to find opportunities to raise standards and secure better commercial, social and environmental outcomes. I would like to thank our fantastic workforce for helping us achieve our goals and deliver commercial cleaning excellence to all our clients.”
