Understanding and managing impacts lies at the heart of the Calabash sustainability strategy. From mapping our value chain to measuring our GHG emissions, we are committed to gaining the insight we need to make better choices for people and planet. We want to build a supply chain that supports our work and shares our ethos. Evans Vanodine is a trusted partner on our journey helping us select low impact high performance cleaning products that deliver exceptional results whilst helping us meet our sustainability objectives.

The business

Evans Vanodine is a family business that traces its roots back to 1919. Based on Walton Summit near Preston, the company has expanded its portfolio of cleaning and hygiene products over the ensuing year and used its expertise in microbiology and research and development to drive continual improvement.

Like Calabash, the business has developed a robust sustainability strategy and is striving to reducing its environmental footprint at the same time as securing positive social impact. It has been a certified Planet Mark member since 2019 and was recently awarded the EcoVadis Committed badge.

Green Tick

Building sustainable supply chains is about fostering relationships with partners that share your values and priorities. Evans Vanodine has become one of our most trusted suppliers. That is not only due to the quality of their products and customer service. The business has applied its innovation to develop a system that helps improve our sustainability credentials.

The company is committed to supporting customers make more responsible choices and has developed the unique GreenTick system for monitoring the impact its cleaning products have on the environment, which takes into account formulation, manufacturing, use and disposal.

Greentick Environmental Impact Rated

The system classifies each product according to its overall environmental impact, compiling scores across eight different criteria:

  • Impact of hazard class
  • PH balance
  • Impact of raw materials
  • Impact of energy used
  • Impact of transportation
  • Water used to manufacture
  • Impact of product in use
  • Impact of packaging used

The criteria are used to create a holistic lifecycle view of the processes and product, whilst aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Products which achieve the lowest impact rating within their range/category are identified with a GreenTick logo on the label.

One advantage of scoring all our products against GreenTick methodology is that it enables us to highlight the lowest impact product within each product categories. It gives peace of mind that we are using the lowest impact product suitable for any given cleaning task.

Evans Vanodine is keen to point out that using a low impact product to carry out a cleaning task in the wrong circumstance does not serve the best interest of the environment. It is important that you select the right product for the job, use the recommended dilution rate and dispose of the product responsibly.

Calabash cleaning professionals are renowned for their attention to detail and their consistency in exceeding customer expectations. By using GreenTick products, we can demonstrate how using low impact high performance products maintains the highest cleaning standards with minimum impact on the environment. To further enhance the GreenTick sustainability credentials, bottles can be refilled at the end of use to reduce packaging waste.

Evans Vanodine Environment and Sustainability Manager Vikki Morris said: “All chemicals affect the environment, even water. What we are doing is helping our customers make informed choices that reduce their impact. We have sourced the materials and manufactured the products so have all the information we need to do a lifecycle analysis. That transparency helps improve sustainability performance.”

At Calabash for example, we know that our GreenTick toilet cleaner is phosphate free and none of the products in the range contain PFAS, or so-called “forever chemicals” that have devastating impacts on marine ecosystems.

Our relationship with our supply chain is a cornerstone of our sustainability strategy. We are always looking for ways to better manage our impacts and drive best practice throughout the facilities management sector.
